An ailing, endangered finback whale has been found beached at an isolated stretch of shoreline in Queens, New York city.

Emergency workers and marine biologists responded to a report of a 60-foot (18-metre) whale that was stranded on the bay side of the Rockaways.

Officials say it is unclear what caused the whale to beach itself, but its chances of survival appear slim.

One biologist said the huge bulk is barely moving and looks 'compromised'.

Now, there is a wait for the tides to subside to determine what to do next.

The finwhale - also called the rorqual - once ranged the world's oceans, feeding on krill, squid and small fish, but is now an endangered species with an estimate of some 100,000 remaining.

They are said to grow to almost 90-feet (27 meters), weigh up to 82 tons (tonnes) and swim faster than an ocean liner.
