Ki-moon congratulates Tunisians for democratic transition
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon late Sunday congratulated the Tunisian people and interim authorities for holding a "historic" Constituent Assembly election earlier in the day in a "peaceful and orderly" manner, and commended the Independent High Authority for the Elections, headed by Kamal Jendoubi, for its role in ensuring a "transparent" electoral process, his press office said in a statement.

Ban encouraged all stakeholders in Tunisia to remain committed to the principles of inclusiveness and transparency throughout the remaining parts of the transition process. He expressed satisfaction that the UN was able, at the request of the Tunisian authorities, to provide technical electoral assistance to support the elections organized and managed by Tunisia.

Earlier this year, the Tunisian people inspired the region and the world when they stood up courageously to demand democracy, freedom and dignity forcing former dictator Zine Elabideen Ben Ali to flee the country.
