Saudi Shiite figures slam "Interior Ministry accusations"

More than 135 Shiite figures in Saudi Arabia announced on Wednesday their rejection to "the offensive accusations" of the Saudi Interior Ministry pertaining to an alleged spy ring linked to Iran.

Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday that material evidence and detainees' confessions have confirmed that members of a group had received money from the Islamic Republic for information on vital locations in the kingdom.

The ministry said on March 19 that security authorities had arrested an 18-member spy ring, including an Iranian, a Lebanese and 16 Saudis.

Iran denied on Sunday any involvement in the espionage accusations. The two countries have a hostile relationship and frequently trade denunciations.
