Quake caused no reactor damage, Iran tells IAEA

Iran has told the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency that an earthquake that hit the country on Tuesday did not damage the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the IAEA said.

"Iran has informed (the IAEA's Incident and Emergency Centre) of the event, reporting that there has been no damage to the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and no radioactive release from the installation," the U.N. agency said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, thirty people were killed and 800 injured in a powerful earthquake that struck close to Iran's only nuclear power plant, the Iranian Students' News Agency reported.

A magnitude 6.3 quake struck 89 km (55 miles) southeast of the port city of Bushehr, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

"Up until now the earthquake has left behind 30 dead and 800 injured," said Fereydoun Hassanvand, the governor of Bushehr province, according to ISNA.

The Iranian Seismological Center at the University of Tehran measured the quake at 6.1 magnitude whose epicenter was Kaki, 60 miles (90 km) south of Bushehr and which was felt  in Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain. Five aftershocks struck within an hour.

"The Bushehr nuclear power plant but did not affect its operations", an official with the Russian company that built the plant was quoted as saying by state news agency RIA.

"The earthquake in no way affected the normal situation at the reactor, personnel continue to work in the normal regime and radiation levels are fully within the norm," RIA quoted an official at Atomstroyexport as saying.
