Six confirmed killed in Philadelphia building collapse

Search teams have found a woman buried beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in the US city of Philadelphia and taken her to a hospital.

61-year-old Myra Plekam was pulled from the debris early on Thursday morning, more than 12 hours after the building collapsed.

She was awake and talking to rescuers.

Plekam is the 14th survivor of Wednesday's collapse which has already claimed six lives, according to Mayor Michael Nutter.

Searchers are still combing through the pile of brick, wood and other debris.

The collapse involved an empty building that was being torn down, and that once housed a first-floor sandwich shop and apartments above.

The collapsing building damaged a Salvation Army charity shop next door. Several witnesses said they had been casting a wary eye on the demolition site and questioned how the workers were tackling the job.
