Masnaa Crossing under threat: Israel raises stakes on Lebanon's eastern gateway

Report by Lara El Hachem, English adaptation by Yasmine Jaroudi

The Masnaa Border Crossing has returned to the spotlight after Israel threatened to target it, a move that echoes similar strikes during the 2024 war.

Israel claims Hezbollah is using the crossing to smuggle weapons, raising questions over whether the site constitutes a genuine supply route or signals preparations for a broader ground operation.

Lebanese political and security sources reject the allegation, saying it is virtually impossible for the crossing to be used for smuggling, particularly in light of recent changes in Syria and ongoing security coordination between Lebanese and Syrian authorities.

The sources point to the presence of advanced scanning systems at the crossing, as well as tight monitoring by the Lebanese Army on one side and Syrian forces on the other, including oversight of unofficial routes, making illicit transfers highly difficult.

They also note that Israel maintains extensive aerial surveillance over both Lebanese and Syrian airspace, giving it the capability to detect and strike any suspected smuggling operations.

Against this backdrop, the sources say the crossing is unlikely to serve as a supply line for Hezbollah. Instead, they suggest the warning may be part of broader pressure on the Lebanese state to implement commitments related to disarming the group.

Concerns about a possible Israeli ground advance into the Bekaa region persist.

However, military observers say any such operation would likely originate from Mount Hermon, where Israeli forces maintain a presence.

So far, the Lebanese Army has reported no unusual troop movements or buildups indicating an imminent ground incursion, though fears remain of limited operations such as airborne raids similar to those previously reported in Nabi Chit.

Overall, the developments suggest that the primary objective of the Israeli warning may be strategic pressure, with the Masnaa crossing, a key economic artery and vital route linking Lebanon to Arab countries, at the center of that effort.
