Italian Senate approves austerity measures

The Italian Senate approved a series of economic measures demanded by the European Union on Friday to reduce debt and stimulate economic growth. The Parliament is scheduled to ratify these measures on Saturday.

Following the final ratification of these measures that aim at containing the crisis, Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi will officially resign as President Giorgio Napolitano will appoint former European commissioner to replace him.
