REPORT: Marwan Charbel on an inspection visit to Roumieh

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel arrived to Roumieh central prison Monday on an inspection visit to check up on the completed works, in the presence of Director General of the Internal Security Forces brigadier Ibrahim Basbous and a number of senior officers.

In this context, Charbel held a press conference from the penitentiary highlighting both the improvements and the areas that still need further development.

Charbel declared that the government designated the restoration of 3 buildings in Roumieh prison to a certain company, pointing out that measures had been taken to improve the performance and productivity of labor in the completion of maintenance, and stressing that he would not agree to fund a project to rehabilitate Roumieh prison except in accordance to specific codes and studies.

He then urged the Head of the Supreme Judiciary Council Judge Jean Fahed to inspect the prison court room, "since it is ready for the start of trials," warning that the court could be transformed into another prison cell in case it were not put to its designated use, thus defeating the purpose of its construction.

Roumieh, Lebanon's central prison, presents a poor setting with too narrow a spaces to accommodate the number of inmates, and lacks adequate health standards. It has also been the scene of several riots and protests, some of which turned violent due to the deteriorating conditions prevalent at the facility.
