REPORT: Jumblatt says Hezbollah military involvement in Syria is not the reason behind IS attacks in Lebanon
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt saluted on Sunday the martyrs of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the residents of Arsal, who supported the soldiers in confronting the armed groups.

Jumblatt's comments were made following a tour in the Deir Qoubel and Choueifat regions.

“We should rise above all internal political disputes and support the Lebanese army and security forces in their battle against the armed groups and Takfiri movements,” he noted.

Jumblatt voiced hopes that the pointless political debates over the presidency would end in order to elect a president as soon as possible and establish the foundations of the Lebanese state to perform its duties.

"We need dialogue in order to put an end to the terrorism threatening Lebanon," he added.

He also stressed that Hezbollah military involvement in Syria "is not the reason behind the Islamic State's attacks in Lebanon."

Hezbollah has sent fighters to Syria to fight alongside the Syrian regime troops against the rebels seeking to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

On Saturday, clashes erupted between the Lebanese army and the al-Nusra Front in Arsal following the arrest of a member of the armed group.

Nine soldiers were killed in the clashes, while others were injured.

Some 20 security forces members were taken captive during the fighting.

Lebanon has been without a president since May when the mandate of Michel Sleiman ended.

The ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a presidential candidate has thwarted the elections.
