REPORT: Economy Minister dubs visit to Beirut Port a ‘media circus’
“The fight against corruption starts with addressing key governmental files such as waste,” Economy Minister Alain Hakim said, in reference to Health Minister Abou Faour's food safety campaign.

In a press conference on Monday, the minister described a recent visit by him and Abou Faour to the wheat silos at the Beirut Port as a “media circus.”

Hakim also slammed what he dubbed a “media show” as unacceptable, saying “the condition of the wheat is good because silos are hermetically sealed off”.

Ministers of Health and Economy have been at loggerheads and have traded accusations over the campaign that has been launched by Abou Faour late last year.

Almost one week ago, Health Minister Wael Abou Faour along with Economy Minister Alain Hakim and Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb toured the port of Beirut and inspected the wheat silos.

Chehayeb stated that the state of hygiene and cleanliness at the wheat silos inside the Beirut Port is catastrophic, stressing that this situation should be addressed at the soonest possible.

For his part, Abou Faour noted that “Lebanese citizens are sharing wheat with rats and pigeons,” noting that reforms carried out in the recent past are not enough.

He also stressed that the dossier of the Beirut Port will be referred to the judiciary, “because all parties responsible for this chaotic situation should be held accountable.”
