The session was convened at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam who expressed his discontent over the failure to find common grounds between the government's rival sides. Cabinet did not address details related to the waste crisis because Salam had reached a deal with Free Patriotic Movement ministers not to discuss thorny issues prior to solving the dispute on the cabinet's work mechanism. Salam also threatened that he would submit his resignation over his concerns that the cabinet crisis would not be resolved. For his part, Minister of Justice Achraf Rifi said he had asked Salam whether he would resign if no agreement is reached between ministers. The cabinet will convene next Tuesday to continue discussions, noted Information Minister Ramzi Jreij. After the session, Environment Minister Mohammed Mashnouq said that he was seeking to find landfills in several regions across the country to allow Sukleen to transport the uncollected waste in both Beirut and Mount Lebanon. The garbage crisis emerged after the Naameh landfill south of Beirut was shut down in the weekend under a decision taken by the cabinet. As waste continue to accumulate in the streets, the Beirut Fire Department said it had extinguished more than 140 fires set on dumpsters across Beirut since Monday.
