Before And After: Major Earthquake Destroys Nepal's Centuries-Old Temples

A catastrophically powerful earthquake hit Nepal on Saturday, leaving massive destruction and a shocking death toll behind it.

Many of the country's historical sites were reduced to rubble by the most severe earthquake to hit Nepal in more than 80 years. Four of the historical sites, deemed by UNESCO to be World Heritage Sites, were badly damaged while others were destroyed.

Having visited Nepal just a few months back, and enjoyed each of its grand monuments and the serenity of its temples, i find myself today mourning the loss of these riches. Nepal has been devastated by this massive earthquake, but it is the whole world that lost a major chunk of its irreplaceable historical heritage.

One of the things i regret about my trip to Nepal was not taking enough pictures of the awe-inspiring monuments. Luckily, Lebanese artist Himzu Bavic also visited Nepal for inspiration and came back with pictures of each and every site, now reduced to ashes ... along a piece of our hearts.

He was generous enough to share some of these pictures with me, and a few more on his Facebook page saying " Around 80% of ‪Nepal's cultural and religious riches are either lost or severely damaged, including Boudhanath and the Monkey Temple and Durbar Square which i visited during my stay there. The world has indeed lost greatly!"
