REPORT: No evidence to prove Naim Abbas’ involvement in Francois al-Hajj and Walid Eido’s assassination

Well-informed sources told LBCI on Thursday that the investigations conducted with Naim Abbas, who was arrested on Wednesday in the region of Cornish al-Mazraa, do not prove his involvement in the assassination attacks that targeted Maj. Gen. Francois al-Hajj and MP Walid Eido.

This as Abbas confessed to organizing suicide bomber attacks and other operations in the Dahiyeh and Choueifat regions since 2012.

The Lebanese Armed Forces arrested on Wednesday the Palestinian national identified as Naim Abbas dubbed "the most dangerous terrorist in the country," while preliminary information revealed that Abbas had been at the receiving end of a network smuggling booby trapped cars from Omar al-Atrash.

After his arrest, Abbas confessed the presence of an explosive-laden vehicle, which was later found and dismantled by Lebanese Armed Forces units. The vehicle was a black RAV 4 SUV loaded with explosives parked in a parking lot in the Corniche al-Mazraa region.

MP Walid Eido was killed on June 13, 2007, along with his eldest son Khaled and eight other people, when a booby-trapped car tore through the politician's convoy near Beirut's seafront. The explosion also wounded 11 people and caused severe material damages. Eido was a member of parliamentary majority leader MP Saad Hariri's Future Movement and one of the most vocal critics of what he repeatedly called "Syria's relentless interference" in Lebanon.

Army officer, Brig. Gen. François al-Hajj (54) was killed on December 12, 2007 when a bomb under a parked blue BMW sedan exploded as he drove past on his way to work at the Defense Ministry. The explosion also killed al-Hajj’s bodyguard and wounded six people, while it set other cars on fire and left a hole six feet wide in the ground.
