Ban from Beirut: Assad must "stop killing" in Syria

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said that the major events that swept through the Arab world are part of a story written by the people that should be assisted to write the second chapter.

During an ESCWA conference held at Phoenicia Hotel in Beirut, Ban urged Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday to halt violence against a 10-month uprising in which the U.N. says more than 5,000 people have been killed.

"Today, I say again to President Assad of Syria: Stop the violence. Stop killing your people. The path of repression is a dead end," he said.

Ban said that democracy needs time and a lot of efforts to be rebuilt, stressing that the new regimes must protect the rights of the minorities.

For his part, PM Najib Mikati reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to UNSC resolution 1701, while keeping its right to free its occupied territories. He added that the Lebanese government prioritized the administrative reform process and the fight against corruption.
