Iran offers solution to Lebanon's electricity problem

Iran proposed to supply Lebanon's need for 1000 Megawatts (MW) of electricity, an amount which ambassador of the Persian state described as "modest" during his visit Saturday to Foreign Minister (FM) Adnan Mansour, whereby he delivered a hand-written letter addressed from Iranian FM, Ali Akbar Salihi.

Lebanon has long suffered from an electricity shortage; the capital receives the lion's share with 21 hours of electricity per day when all is going well.

The rest of the country continues to endure continuous blackouts, often leading to street protests and road closures by frustrated residents.

"We found that the road is paved for Iran to carry out its offer," explained ambassador Ghadanfar Roken Abadi, "one aspect of the plan would involve supplying electricity from Iran via Syria, and the next phase would involve building power plants [in Lebanon]."

"We currently export 25 thousand MW, and produce a six thousand MW production surplus; thus, we can solve this issue with ease and as soon as possible."
