Chouf’s Deir Baba is being washed off the map

The residents of Deir Baba village in the Chouf staged a protest on Wednesday on their village’s main road. They urged the state, especially the Social Affairs Ministry, to take prompt action to control floods caused by heavy rains in Kfarhim. Residents are demanding that flood waters be controlled as the runoff is causing homes in the area to collapse.

The village’s mayor Akram Tarabay said that building collapses are spiking due to the floodwaters from Kfarhim carrying away the soil and causing landslides. “The village is crippled and waiting for the concerned officials to do something”, Tarabay added.

The mayor stressed that a number of drainage pipes were clogged, because the village lacks a municipality to settle such problems.

“People’s lives are in danger”, Tarabay said, calling on some of the village’s residents to evacuate their homes to prevent human and natural disasters.
