Karzai says US officer burned Korans, Obama apologizes

Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Thursday blamed a U.S. military officer for the burning of Korans at a major NATO base which triggered three days of violent protests.

Karzai told MPs at his presidential palace that the officer acted "out of ignorance and with poor understanding" of the Koran's importance as Islam's holy book, a presidential statement said.

On a related note, the White House announced that U.S. President Barack Obama sent a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai apologizing for the burning of copies of Koran at U.S. military base in Afghanistan.

"In the letter, delivered by Ambassador (Ryan) Crocker this afternoon in Kabul, the president also expressed our regret and apologies over the incident in which religious materials were unintentionally mishandled at Bagram Airbase ," White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

The burning of Korans at the Bagram airbase near Kabul has sparked fierce protests against U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan.
