Connelly: We fear that developments in Syria lead to instability in Lebanon
U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Maura Connelly voiced her fear that developments in Syria contribute to shaking Lebanon’s stability. She reiterated Washington’s commitment to a stable, sovereign and independent Lebanon.

Following her meeting with al-Marada leader MP Sleiman Frangieh in Bnachi, Connelly said that the latest visit of Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn to Iran and the statement he made from Tehran worried her.

Connelly raised concerns regarding Ghosn’s recent trip to Iran and his statements from Tehran that suggest the minister’s discussions could potentially lead to violations by Lebanon of UN Security Council Resolutions 1747 and 1929.

She stressed that Lebanon must respect all of its international commitments.

Connelly said that Washington is concerned about the Syrian regime’s continuing use of violence against the Syrian people, including ongoing attacks on Homs. She called on the regime to put an end to attacks against civilians and follow-up on the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the besieged Syrian people.
