Introduction to the evening news 07-03-2012

Developments in Syria are unfolding rapidly. Firstly, the U.N. headed towards Damascus: the U.N. envoy Kofi Annan, who is currently in Cairo, will arrive on Saturday in Syria. However according to Reuters, Annan’s visit would have been more fruitful had it been to Moscow.   

Reuters’ analysis means that the conflict in Syria turned into a conflict between Washington and its allies on the one hand and Russia and China on the other. This conflict extended the armed clashes that are witnessing ups and downs according to its results. In fact, after the regime tightened its grip on Baba Amro it seized the opportunity to catch its breath leaving the new destination of the opposition unknown.   

In Lebanon and in light of measures taken to tighten border control, the Future bloc escalated its stances against the Syrian regime. During a speech delivered on the occasion of the Future Movement’s political document on the Arab Spring, Former PM Saad Hariri said that there is a killed called the regime of Bashar Assad.

Meanwhile and on a related note, the Higher Defence Council will hold a session in Baabda Palace on Thursday while the cabinet’s session, scheduled for tomorrow, was postponed until Friday in line with the 48 hour-delay given to MPs to review the contents of the agenda. The same agenda that includes the overspending done between 2006 and 2010 and the draft decree to grant the Ministry of Finance an 8.9 trillion LBP credit to cover public expenses for the current year. If these two drafts are adopted, we can say that the billions settlement has matured.
