France will downsize UNIFIL contingent
France will downsize its contingent operating within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry, Bernard Valero, said on Tuesday.

"As of April, France will downsize its UNIFIL contingent by nearly 400 members, making the total number of soldiers 1000 by the summer, as per the strategic review relayed by UN Chief, Ban Ki-moon," Valero said.

Valero stressed that the Lebanese authorities were notified of the decision when PM Najib Mikati visited France on February 10, adding that Israel as well as all other countries participating in the U.N. peacekeeping forces were briefed on the decision.

The Security Council asked U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to conduct a strategic review to the UNIFIL’s role. Ban submitted his findings to the council.
