Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai stressed the importance of electing a new president the soonest possible, noting that “the stubbornness of the political parties in refraining from electing a president is the peak of indifference.”
In his holy sermon delivered during a mass celebrating the New Year at Bkerke, he regretted that “the parliamentary blocs have refused to discuss the new presidential initiative that was supported by international powers, after one month since it has been declared.”
He also reiterated the need to distinguish between the presidential initiative and the proposed name, pointing out that first the initiative has to be approached, and then the name will be discussed.
“It would be better to attend the electoral session with more than one candidate in order to practice the real democratic process like developed countries,” he stated.
