Police extend custody of Merah relatives
French police have extended the custody of two family members of Mohamed Merah, the 23-year old suspected killer who was shot dead in a violent standoff with Special Forces on Thursday.

Prosecutors extended the detention of Abdelkader Merah, Mr. Merah's older brother, as well as that of their mother, said a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor's office on Friday.

She said the older Mr. Merah's girlfriend's custody was also extended. Suspects in terrorism-related cases in France can be held for questioning for up to 96 hours without a lawyer, in 48-hour chunks.

The family members of the suspected killer of seven people in a series of deadly attacks in southern France were arrested on Wednesday after police surrounded Mohamed Merah's Toulouse apartment.

Prosecutors are continuing their probe as they try to determine whether the suspect had accomplices.
