Minister Bassil calls for dealing with trash crisis “on a scientific basis”
Minister of Foreign Affairs Gebran Bassil stressed on Friday the necessity to take further effective measures in the file of refugees, calling on to entering into comprehensive negotiations between the International community and the Syrian government to organize the return of the refugees.
On another note, Bassil urged for the decentralization in the waste management and to encourage the municipalities to receive its periodic share from the municipal revenues.
“The export of waste is the worst solution,” Bassil noted at a press conference.
The minister also called on the Lebanese officials to deal with the issue “on a scientific basis.”
The garbage crisis erupted in last July when the landfill in the town of Naameh south of Beirut was shut down.
Garbage started to pile up on the streets, and trash was dumped in makeshift landfills.
When a plan to decentralize trash management failed, the Lebanese government approved a plan to export the garbage.
