Environment Minister Machnouq says army, ISF should protect proposed landfills

Environment Minister Mohammad Machnouq called on Saturday for a state of environmental emergency, demanding the security forces to protect the proposed landfill locations.

"I call for the declaration of an environmental emergency and for tasking the Lebanese army and Internal Security Forces with protecting the suggested landfill sites," Machnouk said his via Twitter account.

"Everyone wants to establish landfills, but no one wants to impose them. Therefore, we're back to square one," he added.

The Council for Development and Reconstruction canceled its waste deportation deal with Chinook Urban Mining on Friday after the firm failed to meet a deadline to submit its permits.

This comes several days after Russia denied that it had given a green light to receive Lebanon's garbage.

Lebanon has witnessed a 7-month-long waste crisis, with the Cabinet seeing no clear vision of reaching a solution in this regard.
