Marada Movement chief MP Sleiman Frangieh stressed that former Prime Minister Saad Hariri did not break the Christian consensus when he nominated him for presidency, but he committed to the standards set during Bkerke meeting.
“When Bkerke changes the standards, we will commit to them; we support any candidate reached through agreement,” he said.
Speaking from the residence of Mufti Malek al-Chaar in the northern city of Tripoli, Frangieh said that a president must emerge form his own environment and be acceptable to the others, stressing the need to agree with Hariri over prioritizing the positive sides over the negative ones.
For his part, Mufti al-Chaar said that “a nation cannot be built with stubbornness, hatred or obstructing institutions, but with agreement and dialogue,” noting that raising rhetoric that the president must be elected by the Christians is a setback and a violation to the Lebanese system.
Later, Frangieh visited Tripoli's Maronite archbishopric, where he met with Bishop George Bou Jaoudeh.
