REPORT: Hollande urges Lebanon's politicians to elect a president

French President Francois Hollande urged Lebanon's politicians to elect a president as soon as possible, saying it was in the country's and the region's interests to ensure the post was filled.

Political rivalries exacerbated by tensions in the wider region have left Lebanon without a president for almost two years. The position is reserved for a Maronite Christian under Lebanon's constitution, under which the prime minister is a Sunni Muslim and the speaker of parliament is a Shi'ite Muslim.

Hollande on Saturday also said France would provide immediate addition military aid to Lebanon.
