Sukleen hearing session adjourned until May 9

Beirut First Investigative Judge Ghassan Oueidat postponed Thursday a hearing session set for Monday in the file of Sukleen to May 9.

Last month, Oueidat received the financial prosecution's lawsuit against Sukleen.

Financial Prosecutor Ali Ibrahim filed a lawsuit against Sukleen and Sukomi two months ago. The CEO of Averda, the parent company of the two firms, Maysarah Sukkar, along with D.G. Jones Partners Limited and Laceco SARL were also named.

The two companies, which were awarded contracts in the 1990s to manage Beirut and Mount Lebanon waste, came under scrutiny last year when municipal waste services collapsed in July.

Sukleen and Sukomi were not directly responsible for the collapse – it was the Environment Ministry that closed the region’s primary landfill in Naameh – but the crisis, which has dragged on until today, drew renewed attention to the companies’ budgets and practices.
