Dispute breaks out between street merchants, municipal police in Nabatieh
A scuffle erupted Monday between street vendors and municipal police in the southern city of Nabatieh after the municipality took a decision to displace the merchants from Husseiniya Street to al-Sultan Street due to security measures taken for the occasion of Ashoura.

The sellers refused such a decision and blocked the road.

Meanwhile, Mayor Ahmad Kahil arrived at the scene to negotiate with the street sellers, and managed to restore calm.

Security agencies reinforce their positions during the commemoration ceremonies to avert any plots of sabotage.

The occasion of Ashoura commemorates the killing of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, by the army of the Caliph Yazid in 680 AD, the formative event in Shiite Islam.
