UN Chief report on Resolution 1559 calls on implementing “most difficult” provisions
UN Chief Ban Ki-Moon called on Lebanese authorities to implement the outstanding provisions of the UNSCR 1559, describing the items as "the most difficult and sensitive.”

In his semi-annual report on Resolution 1559, Ban stressed that Hezbollah and other armed groups are obstructing the implementation of the resolution, adding that the presence of armed groups is incompatible with the resolution’s goal to consolidate Lebanon’s sovereignty and political independence and does not protect the unique pluralistic system of the country as well as the rights of the Lebanese citizens.

The U.N. chief criticized the use of illegitimate arms across Lebanon, especially in residential areas, stressing the importance of “transparently” extending financial assistance to Lebanon through its “governmental channels.”

Ban called for turning Hezbollah into a political party in line with the Taif accord and Resolution 1559.
