REPORT: Rescued children of Sudanese IS members in Libya return home

The children of Sudanese Islamic State members who operated in Libya are to be returned to their relatives in Sudan, a Sudanese community leader in Misrata, Moataz Abbas, said on Friday.

The children, four boys and four girls aged 10 months to 9 years, had lived with parents who fought for IS in the coastal city of Sirte since 2015.

Sirte was Islamic State's most important base outside the Middle East and attracted large numbers of foreign fighters. It imposed its ultra-hardline rule on residents, and extended its control along about 250 km (155 miles) of Libya's Mediterranean coastline.

Libyan forces, backed by U.S. air strikes, finished clearing the city last year after a near seven-month battle for the militant group's former North African stronghold. The children, after being placed in what Abbas described as “corrective institution,” were moved from Sirte to Misrata before being taken to Sudan via Tripoli's airport.
