Al Shabaab blamed for deadly Somalia attack
An Islamist attack on a hotel in the Somali capital claimed by Al Shabaab ended on Sunday after 25 people were killed in a near 12-hour siege, police said.

The attack underlines the insurgents' ability to carry out deadly attacks in the heart of the city. The dead include police, hotel guards and residents, the police said, and the death toll may rise. They also said some militants disguised themselves and escaped with the residents who were rescued.

Three militants were captured alive and two others blew up themselves up after they were shot, police added. The attack began around at 5 p.m. on Saturday with a car bomb. Gunmen then stormed the building after the bomb had destroyed its defenses. The siege ended on Sunday morning. A Reuters witness saw seven bodies lying inside the hotel.

The explosion destroyed the front of the three-story hotel and a next door hotel was also damaged. Many Somali officials live in fortified hotels because they offer better security from attack.
