Sniping resumes in Tripoli, Shaar pleads for calm

Two Energa mortars were thrown in Syria Street, Tripoli, on Tuesday afternoon with  no immediate injuries reported. This as sniper activity resumed between Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Overnight, an uneasy calm prevailed in the city after unknown people set fire overnight to a furniture store and bakery in al-Mina area as well as two other shops in the city. Fire trucks rushed to the scene to put out the fire while the ISF launched an investigation into the incident.    

Security forces had earlier set dozens of checkpoints in Tripoli and carried out patrols across the city streets.

For his part, Mufti of Tripoli and the North Sheikh Malek al-Shaar urged the rival neighborhoods to reunite and resolve their disputes pleading the two parties to stop bickering among each other.           

“The two sides should cooperate and find consensus in an attempt to remove all the obstacles between the two neighbors,” Shaar said after holding talks with Prime Minister Najib Miqati at the Grand Serail.         

Shaar hailed Mikati’s efforts to restore calm in Tripoli, stressing the importance of fortifying stability in the city.
