REPORT: New Year event gathers Tripoli’s rivals

Musical performances, dances, handicrafts, and many others, are the main activities of the event organized by the March Association in the northern city of Tripoli.

The activities aimed at celebrating the new year’s eve and to gather the youth of Tripoli’s rival neighborhoods.

Since the start of the crisis in neighboring Syria in March 2011, clashes between the two rival Tripoli neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen have killed hundreds and injured others.

Intermittent clashes are however witnessed since 2008 between the mainly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and the predominantly Sunni region of Bab al-Tabbbaneh, and have escalated sometimes intensely over the past years.
