Minivan hits roadside bomb, killing 5 Afghans
Afghan authorities say a minivan has hit a roadside bomb, killing five civilians including a 3-year-old child.

Shahidullah Shahid, who is a spokesman for Wardak province south of Kabul, says the van hit the bomb early Tuesday in Sayd Abad district.

Four other civilians and three Afghan soldiers died in another roadside bomb incident Monday evening in the western province of Farah.

Ghawisdin, who is the top official in Pusht Rod district, says the soldiers died when their vehicle hit the explosives. He says when local villagers ran to the scene to help, other soldiers wounded in the explosion thought they were under attack. They fired, killing the four.

The U.N. says last year was the deadliest on record for civilians in the Afghan war, with 3,021 killed.
