No cut-off roads in Akkar today, al-Bireh residents wait for cabinet session

The town of al-Bireh in Akkar is waiting in anticipation for the cabinet session that will be held this afternoon at Baabda Palace to tackle the killing of Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Wahed and companion Sheikh Mohammad Hussain Merheb as well as the possibility of referring this case to the Judicial Council.       

At the entrance of al-Bireh, protestors told LBCI that they are ready to move their sit-in to outside the residence of PM Najib Mikati and outside the Grand Serail if their demands are not met and if the case of the Sheikhs’ killing is not submitted to the Judicial Council.      

In this regard, NNA reported on Monday that there are no cut-off roads in Akkar today, adding that dirt hills are still on the side of the roads.      

At the entrance of al-Bireh town, political, religious and partisan figures are flocking to the tent that still stands, in solidarity with the relatives of late Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Wahed and companion Sheikh Mohammad Hussain Merheb. They are waiting for the outcome of this afternoon’s cabinet session in regards to the referral of the case of the Sheikhs’ killing to the Judicial Council. Protestors said that if this demand is not met, they will hold a series of protests in Akkar and across Lebanon, including rallies outside the cabinet, in Beirut’s squares and outside officials’ houses, all the way to a civil disobedience.      
 
In this context, a meeting will be held later on in the town of al-Bireh following the cabinet session in order to take decisions accordingly.         

Sheikh Abdul Wahed and his companion Sheikh Mohammad Hussain Merheb were killed on the 20th of May after failing to stop at an LAF checkpoint while on route to a rally organized by MP Khaled Daher in Halba to commemorate the killing of Future Movement supporters during clashes in 2008.
