Qassem: Cabinet cannot be complete without independent Sunnites

Hezbollah deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem asserted on Saturday that Hezbollah supports the formation of a new Cabinet as soon as possible.

“However, the solution is in the hands of Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri,” he added.

He also noted that independent Sunnites represent a large number of Lebanese people and must be represented in the next Cabinet.

“We support the formation of a national unity Cabinet, but this Cabinet cannot be complete unless the independent Sunnites were represented in it,” he concluded by saying.

Five months since the parliamentary elections, Hariri has been unable to seal a deal on the formation of a new government because of the demands of rival political parties for cabinet seats.

A deal seemed close few days ago when a row over Christian representation was settled with the Lebanese Forces.

However, Hezbollah is now pressing its demand for one of its Sunni allies to be given a ministerial portfolio to reflect gains they made in the last parliamentary election.
