President Michel Aoun stressed that the best solution for the Syrian refugee crisis lies in their return to the safe regions in Syria, noting that linking the return to the political solution for the Syrian crisis raises doubts regarding their stay in the countries they are currently residing in.
During his meeting with Belgian Speaker Siegfried Bracke and his accompanying parliamentary delegation, Aoun informed the Belgian politician that Lebanon has repeatedly called on the International Community and the United Nations organizations to provide the refugees with the required assistance after they return to Syria, in order to be able to contribute to the reconstruction of their nation and rebuild their houses.
Answering a question, Aoun expressed surprise over the international stances ignoring the need for the refugees to return, emphasizing that Lebanon only asks to separate between the political solution for the Syrian crisis and the refugees who are capable of returning to the safe regions in Syria, especially after reconciliations that took place.
For his part, the Belgian house speaker expressed his pleasure to be in Lebanon with his accompanying delegation, focusing on Lebanon’s importance for the European countries in general and Belgium in particular, noting that his country seeks to boost its ties with Lebanon.
“Belgium will become a member of the UN Security Council as of January 2019 and it will support the Lebanese issues at all international conferences,” he added.
