Social Affairs Minister Wael Abou Faour announced on Monday, following the cabinet session, that the meeting between President Michel Sleiman and MP Walid Jumblatt was set in advance, confirming that the meeting is not related to electoral districts. On the case of the 11 Lebanese abductees in Syria Abou Faour added,  that Sleiman confirmed that the government will continue to pursue the detainees’ case no matter what.  

Abou Faour reported that there is no agreement on the electoral districts’ formation and size. The vote on the electoral draft law will occur tomorrow and the Struggle Front ministers will reject it.

During the session, a six-member committee, headed by PM Najib Mikati, was formed to put forth suggestions related to cannabis destruction, provided that these proposals be submitted within one month. 

The cabinet formed on Monday a ministerial committee spearheaded by PM Mikati to conduct studies on the development of the Northern Bekaa region. Sleiman, Jumblatt held side talks as cabinet remained in session. Cabinet will reconvene tomorrow to discuss divisions of electoral district. 

The cabinet session had kicked off earlier at the Beiteddine Palace on Monday under the chairmanship of President Michel Sleiman. The session is expected to resume talks on the electoral draft law and discuss the compensations to be provided to Bekaa’s cannabis farmers whose crops were destroyed by the ISF.

Before the session, PM Najib Mikati said that the issue of the government’s continuance is not on the table, adding that it is up to the Parliament to decide the cabinet’s fate.          

Earlier on Monday, President Sleiman and PM Mikati had held a closed meeting to discuss an array of issues.
