Jumblatt: Tripoli’s conflict aims at diverting attention from Syria’s conflict

The head of the National Struggle Front, MP Walid Jumblatt said Thusday that the time has come for political parties to realize that the ongoing conflict in the northern city of Tripoli will not affect the course of events in Syria. He noted that Tripoli’s conflict aims at diverting attention from the Syrian crisis.            

In an interview with the Progressive Socialist Party’s website, Jumblatt called on all political parties of the city to halt all kinds of funding, armament and incitement, and to resolve the dispute without resorting to violence, sniping and killing.                

The PSP leader stressed that the developments of events in Tripoli require political awareness to prevent confessional strife, calling on all the residents, no matter their sect, to join their forces to prevent the city from turning into a battle field for proxy wars.              

Jumblatt added that this crisis requires a radical solution, which begins by providing absolute support to the army’s efforts, practically and not theoretically.                

“Cover must be lifted off all gunmen and anyone who breaches security, should be prosecuted”, he noted.             

Jumbatt declared that he will be meeting with the Future Movement which expressed its clear and unequivocal refusal to form a military council for the Sunnis in Lebanon.
