Giraffe escapes from Italian circus, wanders town’s main street

A giraffe escaped from an Italian circus near in the northern city of Bologna, spending several hours on the run.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that the giraffe escaped from the Rinaldo Orfei circus in Imola, Italy and shocked residents as it made its way down the town's main street during rush hour. The five-meter high animal, weighing almost 900kg (2,000lb) jumped on cars, causing damage to some of them.

Eventually, after a few hours, it was shot with a tranquilizer by police. It died shortly afterwards, apparently of a cardiac arrest. No casualties were reported.
