For the first time, Iraq asks Iranian planes to land for random inspections

In an unprecedented move, Iraqi authorities ordered an Iranian cargo plane bound for Damascus from Tehran, to land at Baghdad’s airport on Tuesday for random inspections, but then allowed it to continue its flight as no prohibited items were found.

The head of Iraq's civil aviation authority, Nasser Bandar told AFP that nothing contrary to the instructions banning the transport of weapons between Syrian and Iran was found; “therefore, we allowed the plane to continue its trip.”

In turn, a diplomat at the Iranian embassy in Baghdad confirmed that the Iraqi authorities ordered an Iranian cargo plane to land at Baghdad’s international airport and for a random weapon's inspection.

In this regard, the Iraqi government urged the Parliament to “abolish or prevent the extension” of any agreement allowing the presence of foreign bases on Iraqi territory, “a step that targets Turkish bases north of the country”, according to a government official.
