Syrian state TV says 10 killed by "terrorist" car bomb in Damascus

Syrian state television reported that 10 people, including women and children, were killed by a car bomb in the southeastern district of Jaramana in the capital of Damascus on Monday.

"A terrorist car bomb exploded on the Rooda road, next to the bakery entrance," state TV said. Damascus residents say Jaramana is controlled by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, who is fighting an armed revolt against forty years of family rule.

This after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday he was deeply disappointed that a ceasefire in Syria had failed and he called on government troops and opposition groups to end the fighting immediately.

The ceasefire, proposed by international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, was supposed to come into effect on Friday and last for the four days of the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.

But Syrian jets bombarded Sunni Muslim regions in Damascus and across the country on Sunday, activists said, as President Bashar al-Assad kept up air strikes against rebels despite the proposed truce.

On Monday, Syrian warplanes bombarded a rebel stronghold on the edge of Damascus, opposition activists said.

"I am deeply disappointed that the parties failed to respect the call to suspend fighting," Ban said in the South Korean capital, Seoul, where he accepted a peace prize. "This crisis cannot be solved with more weapons and bloodshed.

"I repeat my call for the Security Council, the regional countries and the region to support Joint Special Representative Lakhdar Brahimi's mission to help move forward on a political track," he said.

Despite the truce, the fighting between rebels and the Syrian Army continued throughout the weekend in Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

Explosions, mortar attacks and gunfire could be heard on Saturday throughout the city that has been reduced to rubble in many areas as a result of the ongoing civil war.

Furthermore, a car bomb exploded in the neighborhood of al-Hajar al-Aswad South Damascus, and casualties were reported.

On Sunday,  Syria's air force fired missiles and dropped barrel bombs on rebel strongholds while opposition fighters attacked regime positions as both sides ignored the ceasefire agreement that started on Friday.

The failure to push through a truce so limited in its ambitions, just four days, has been a sobering reflection of the international community's inability to ease 19 months of bloodshed in Syria.

This as Turkey's state-run news agency said the country's artillery has again responded to a stray shell fired from Syria that landed in Turkey.

The shell landed some 300 meters (yards) away from the Turkish border village of Besaslan on Monday. No one was injured but a power line was destroyed.

The Anadolu agency said Turkey responded to the fire but did not provide details.

Ankara has been firing in retaliation to stray shells and mortars ever since a shell fired from Syria slammed into a Turkish border town, killing five civilians on Oct. 3.

Syrian regime forces have been battling rebels near the town of Haram, in Syria's Idlib province, across the border from Besaslan, despite a cease-fire that was supposed to halt fighting over a four-day Muslim holiday this weekend.
