REPORT: Remarkable moments mark Obama's life

America's first black president, Mr Barack Obama took office amid one of the worst recessions in decades, and he is now seeking a second term amid national polls showing him virtually tied with Republican challenger Mitt Romney.          

Born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Barack Obama is the 44th and current president of the United States.                     

After graduating from Columbia University in New York, Mr Obama worked for three years as a community organiser in poor neighbourhoods in Chicago.                    

He then attended Harvard Law School, becoming the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review.                    

He was a civil-rights lawyer and teacher before pursuing a political career. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996, serving from 1997 to 2004. He was elected to the U.S. presidency in 2008.                   

Obama was characterized by his ability to attract the young population and the centralists. Will he be able to attract them once again?
