Strikes and record unemployment as Greece passes austerity bill

Strikes continued in Greece for the third in a row as the Greek parliament passed on Thursday a new round of austerity measures for four years, while newly released unemployment figured showed a record high of 25.4 per cent.

After Greek lawmakers voted 153-128 for the package of spending cuts and tax increases, transport remained paralyzed in Athens as the metro, suburban railway and taxis continued

The Greek Parliament held a session while a protest against austerity measures was ongoing with around 70 thousand people participating. The police used tear gas grenades to disperse them.
