Tunisian authorities arrests 5 Salafists over attack on Sufi shrine

The Tunisian Ministry of Interior arrested on Monday 5 Salafists suspected of launching the attack on October 16 on a famous Sufi shrine near the Tunisian capital.

"Five suspects identified as extremists were placed in detention after having admitted their responsibility in the attack, while a search continues for three of their accomplices," a statement issued by the Interior Ministry said.

The Saida Manoubia shrine or zawiya in the western La Manouba suburb of the capital was attacked by five armed and hooded men who shinned down ropes from the mausoleum's roof.

Members of Tunisia's militant Salafist movement, thought to number between 3,000 and 10,000, have been implicated in numerous acts of violence.
