REPORT: Beirut loses Amin Maalouf's house

All attempts aimed at saving the house where the Lebanese writer Amin Maalouf grew up and which turned to an important cultural site in the capital Beirut, have failed.         

In this context, on Thursday the third of December, the bulldozers started destroying the 5-storey building in Badaro region.        

In the details, the Culture Minister issued on the 22nd of June 2012 a decision preventing the demolition of the building, due to its distinguished architecture and for having witnessed the country's events in the 50s and the 60s. Four months later, the same Minister issued another decision on the 22nd of October, allowing the demolition of the same building for not enjoying any featured architecture.                   

On the other hand, when the demolition process began, it was revealed that a big part of the building was once renovated in an attempt to preserve it, which means that the plan of the real estate company working on the demolition could have been changed, only if the official in office cared about preserving Lebanon's heritage.
