US, Russia talks on Syria end without breakthrough

International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and senior envoys from Russia and the United States called for a political solution to end Syria's crisis on Friday but reached no breakthrough.    "We stressed again that in our view there was no military solution to this conflict.

We underscored the necessity to reach a political solution based on the Geneva communique of 30 June 2012," Brahimi said in a joint statement read out after his closed-door talks with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

Brahimi, in answer to a question, told reporters in Geneva: "If you are asking whether there is a solution around the corner, I'm not sure that is the case."

Earlier, reports stated that rebels seized the Taftanaz air base in Syria’s northern Idlib province.

This after an explosive device went off on Friday morning in Damascus whose southern neighborhoods were shelled by pro-regime troops, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In a statement, the Observatory reported that the explosive device went off inside a car in al-Thawra Street near the Victoria Bridge in Damascus.

The Observatory added that pro-regime troops also shelled the Damascus neighborhoods of al-Assali, al-Hajar al-Aswad and al-Tadamon.

For its part, the National Syrian Opposition Coalition called on the international community to grant it legitimacy over Syria's seats at the UN and the Arab League.

This as, Kingdom Saudi Arabia said that it will be sending USD 10 Million as urgent relief aids for the displaced Syrians in Jordan.
