Sleiman: Proportionality paves the way for just representation

President Michel Sleiman said that the 1960s electoral law led to “sectarian sorting and unilateral representation among Islamic sects.”

Sleiman considered that an electoral law based on proportional representation would pave the way for a just representation.

During his meeting with a delegation from the Maronite Association, he considered that this law is present at Parliament and it can be amended in a way that mixes both the majoritarian and proportional systems through negotiations.

“This would mark the beginning of a future development after the establishment of a Senate; then a law based on proportional representation will be fully adopted provided that parity is ensured.”

Sleiman called on all parties to heed the people’s needs and find appropriate laws for civil marriage.

Later in the afternoon, Sleiman met with PM Najib Mikati at Baabda Palace whereby they discussed the latest political and security developments, in addition to the agenda of the cabinet session due to be held on Tuesday at the presidential palace.

Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour had briefed the President on the preparations underway to hold the Kuwaiti summit for donor countries in addition to preparations to allow the participation of Lebanese expatriates in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Sleiman also discussed the latest developments in Syria with the Secretary General of the Lebanese-Syrian Higher Council, Nasri Khoury.
