Kortbawi optimistic that elections will be held on time

Minister of Justice Chakib Kortbawi called for paving the way for talks over the different electoral draft laws which require long hours, denying having any information on the course of the recent sub-parliamentary committee’s sessions.

Kortbawi told Sawt Lobnan radio on Sunday that he is optimistic that elections will be held on time, voicing his support for the Orthodox Gathering’s proposal “given the importance of this law which gives voters the right to choose their representatives.” Kortbawi reiterated that he will neither run for parliamentary elections nor for any other elections.

On the situation in Roumieh prison, Kortbawi did not hide the current deficiencies and negligence by security forces, adding that the doors which were broken in 2010 during a major riot which swept through the prison have not been fixed yet, “which spun the detainees’ blocs, mainly bloc B where Fatah al-Islam militants are detained, out of the control of security forces who are unable to enter it.”

Kortbawi admitted that politics intervene in the judiciary, but he said that preliminary interrogations will start as early as next week.
