Bassil: The 1960s electoral law has been buried

Energy Minister Gebran Bassil said Sunday that there is a lot of incitement going on in Lebanon and in the media.

In a press conference held in Batroun, he said that the Arsal incident cannot be isolated from the incidents which took place in al-Donniyeh and Nahr el-Bared, the case of Chadi al-Mawlawi or the Roumieh prison turmoil. Bassil hoped that the LAF will take the appropriate measures in all the regions witnessing illegitimate acts.

On the electoral law, Bassil said that among the many questions that must be answered, we must ask ourselves: Do we want Lebanon to be an entity? Which kind of democracy do we want?”

Bassil stressed the necessity of being aware of the decreasing number of Christians in Lebanon and the demographic increase of Muslims.

In a related context, Bassil stressed that the 1960s electoral law has been “buried”, adding “through their votes, Christians can currently guarantee the victory of only one quarter of their MPs.”
